Citizens Campaign Problem Tripa Peat Swamp

Community living in the area of Rawa Tripa in District Darul Makmur, Nagan Raya district, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, struggling to ask the government to save these peatlands.

A total of 21 village chiefs have made a petition to rescue Rawa Tripa and sent to governments and nongovernmental organizations that support environmental conservation.

Project Leader Sustainable Ecosystems Wetlands Foundation (Yel), Aji Abimayu Darsoyo, in a press release received here on Tuesday (07/13/2010) says, Tripa peat swamp biodiversity entering the Leuser Ecosystem Area (KEL) is now threatened by the expansion of plantation companies . Rawa Tripa area of 31 410 tar fence has three domes at least five meters deep peat store carbon reserves to 100 million tons.

A total of 21 villages in the subdistrict heads Darul Makmur, Nagan Raya, has made a petition to the Regent rescue Rawa Tripa Nagan Raya and Aceh governor asking them to save the national strategic area for the environment.

Community representatives who live around Rawa Tripa has submitted the petition to the Regent through the sub-district of Nagan Raya Darul Makmur Hamidi at Darul Makmur, Saturday (06/05/2010). Community representatives have also submitted petitions to the Governor of Aceh through the Aceh vice governor Muhammad Nazar in Banda Aceh on Wednesday (06/23/2010).

Communities around Rawa Tripa also been sent a copy of the petition to the 40 institutions, including President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Minister of Agriculture Suswono, Zulkifli Hasan, Minister of Forestry, Environment Minister Mohammad Gusti Hatta, and Greenpeace Indonesia on Wednesday (06/02/2010) . However, until now there is no significant response to the struggle of the people Rawa Tripa.

According Abimayu, Rawa Tripa largest store of carbon stock in Aceh that have not been protected. Tripa swamp has an area of 31 410 hectares with 24 088 hectares of primary forest and a 7231 ar hekt is secondary forest. This region has reserves of carbon on the surface of the land area of 4 million tonnes and at least 50 million tonnes in the peat layer.

"We ask the government to review the presence of HGU in Rawa Tripa. The government must also respond to petitions 21 village heads that people's lives depend on Tripa peat swamp," said Abimayu.
